
Comic Book Artist
Larry Welz grew up in Bakersfield, California, in the 1950s & 60s. He escaped to the Haight-Ashbury in San Francisco during the Summer of Love (1967), doing comics the whole time. He was first published in Yellow Dog, an anthology comic by The Print Mint in Berkeley. He achieved some recognition in the San Francisco Bay Area Underground Comics scene with Captain Guts (a rightwing straight superhero who beat up hippies). He appeared in San Francisco Comic Book, the Kids Liberation Coloring Book, Tuff Shit, Slow Death, and did some experimental comics including American Flyer, Monolith, & Bakersfield Kountry Komics. He created Cherry Poptart in 1975. Six years later, he got a Cherry Poptart book together & it was published by Last Gasp of San Francisco. He continued doing more books through the 80s & 90s, to a certain amount of international acclaim. He also painted carnival rides, mostly funhouses, mirror mazes, & dark rides all over the country for over 30 years. He & his wife Sharon lived in Santa Rosa, California for 16 years. They lived in Roswell, New Mexico for 17 years. They now reside in Albuquerque, New Mexico USA.
